What is the difference between an Aga and a Rayburn?

AGA

  • Heat storage cooker.

  • Continuous burning, automatically controlled via thermostat.

  • Separate cooking areas at preset heats; cooking by area rather than temperatures.

  • Two round hot plates; one for boiling, one for simmering. Warming plate on the 4 oven model.

  • Avaiable in natural or propane gas and off-peak electricity.

  • Two oven AGA - hot top oven for roasting and baking
ooooooooooo o- cooler bottom oven for simmering and slow cooking.

ooooooooooooo- moderate oven on bottom right hand side
ooooooooooooo- simmering oven on top left hand side
ooooooooooooo- warming oven on bottom left hand side.

  • All ovens are approx the same size.

  • Most cooking should be undertaken in the ovens.

  • The cookers are assembled on site.

  • Warming plate options on the four oven model

RAYBURN

Can I bring a second-hand Rayburn or Aga from England?.
As these appliances have only been commercialised in
France relatively recently it is rare for us to have second-hand models available.
It should be noted that only very recent gas models that have CE(fr) identification plates can legally be installed in France.
Until now the only oil model that has been proven to work satisfactorily on French heating oil is the cooking only Rayburn 400D (or Aga R40D).
A new diesel AGA suitable for French domestic oil is now available in both the 2 oven and 4 oven models with conventional flue.
It is very risky buying a s/h wood burner with boiler as it is impossible to examine the condition of the boiler and it can be extremely expensive to replace.

Can I have an oil burning AGA or RAYBURN cooker?
The domestic oil used in France is diesel as opposed to kerosene in the UK. Therefore, until now, most of the range of oil burning AGA-RAYBURN cookers would not work in France. The only oil burning RAYBURN cooker approved for installation in France is the R40D (R400K, cooking only.)

Is 28 sec oil  (kerosene) available in France ?
Over the years we have tried many avenues in order to get a supply of kerosene as obvoiusly it does exist here but it always comes back to 3 main problems:
1. It is only distributed in huge tankers  to very large consumers i.e. airports, service stations.
2. If we did manage to find a distributeur in one area that was prepared to deliver to individuals, the price would be very high thus eliminating the main reason for choosing oil as a fuel.
3. It would certainly be delivered in the same tankers that deliver the diesel and the cleanliness problems that exist for diesel (oxidation, dirt and water contamination that can be tolerated by a pressure burner but not by a pot burner) would create major problems.
As a final point, oil Aga's need at least 2 services a year and considering the distances and cost of servicing a second hand oil burning cooker brought from Britain would not be a sensible proposition for a client, especially as such an appliance would not have a manufacturers guarentee to cover travelling and labour costs in the event of problems.
Our aim is to have satisfied customers and the least number of problems possible. We have tried to find solutions for clients who wanted to install conversions or second hand cookers brought over from the UK but it has always ended in problems for us, the client or both - and often it was illegal.
It is for that reason that we have decided to work only with products that are approved for France, that are covered by manufacturer's manufacturers guarantee and that give trouble free service. Even if it ends up costing more at the end of the day everybody is happy, safe and legal.

What are the two different rates of TVA (VAT)?
In France two rates of TVA operate for work associated with property. Prices are generally quoted Hors Taxe (HT) which is without tax. The general rate of 19.6% is then added for the TVA. On a quote this price will be labelled TTC Toutes Taxes Comprises. On building and restoration work on a house that is more than two years old certain work can be eligible for a lower TVA rate of 5.5%. This is the reason why our price lists quote two rates of TVA.

How many radiators can I heat with an appliance of 10kw?
Although in England boilers and stoves are often rated as being able to run ‘x’ number of radiators this can be very misleading because room sizes, and hence radiator sizes, vary enormously in France and whereas a 10kw boiler could run 10 x 1000w (1kw) radiators it could only run 5x 2000w or 4 x 2500w radiators and so on. For that reason we prefer to calculate referring to the volume to be heated (either globally or for individual rooms) taking into account the regional climate and general aspects of the room(s) eg well insulated or not, whether there is a staircase in the room, and whether the windows are double glazed and so on.
